904L is a type of austenitic stainless steel. The addition of molybdenum gives it excellent resistance to localized corrosion, such as pitting and crevice corrosion caused by chlorides. It also has strong resistance to reducing acids, and the addition of copper enhances its general resistance to sulfuric acid in different concentrations. Its high alloy content helps protect against chloride stress corrosion cracking, although it remains somewhat vulnerable. The low carbon content makes it resistant to sensitization during welding, preventing intergranular corrosion (IGC).
