Manufacturing Process
The machinability of grade 202 stainless steel results in long, sticky chips during machining. Machining can also be done in its hardened state. For heat treatment, the material should be heated to 1038°C (1900°F) for 30 minutes and then cooled below 16°C (60°F) to achieve full martensite transformation. This steel can be welded using standard fusion and resistance methods, but oxyacetylene welding should be avoided. The recommended filler metal is AWS E/ER630. Forging can be done after heating the material for 1 hour at 1177°C (2150°F). Forging below 1010°C (1850°F) is not recommended.
Fabrication and Heat Treatment
Forming Grade 201 stainless steel can be shaped using common forming methods and forces similar to those used for 300-series stainless steels.
Welding Grade 201 stainless steel can be welded with all standard welding techniques.
Hot Working Grade 201 stainless steel is hot worked at temperatures between 1149°C and 1232°C (2100°F to 2250°F).
Annealing Grade 201 stainless steel is annealed at temperatures between 1010°C and 1093°C (1850°F to 2000°F). The temperature should not exceed 2000°F to avoid scaling. It should be cooled quickly to prevent carbide formation.
