Marine applications require materials that can withstand the harsh effects of saltwater, which contains about 3.5% salt—enough to corrode regular steel without protection. Monel 400 contains 28% to 34% copper, which gives it excellent resistance to corrosion and makes it a preferred choice among many manufacturers in India.

One of its key advantages is its high tensile strength, which makes it ideal for marine engineering. These flanges are typically produced through annealing, but this process can reduce their strength. To counter this, using tempers can improve both strength and impact resistance. Although Monel 400 contains a high amount of copper, which usually reacts to acids, it is resistant to hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids when de-aerated. However, it should not be used in environments with ammonia or nitric acid, as these can quickly damage the alloy due to its copper content.
