What is Monel 400/ K500 Plate ?
Monel is a registered trademark name used by Special Metals Corporation for a group of corrosion-resistant nickel-based alloys. These alloys are known for their excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, saltwater, and a range of acid and alkaline solutions. Other manufacturers also produce alloys with similar chemical and mechanical properties, offering alternatives to Monel® alloys.
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy (about 67% nickel and 23% copper) that resists seawater, steam at high temperatures, and salt and caustic solutions. It’s a solid solution alloy, meaning it can only be hardened through cold working. This alloy is widely used in marine environments due to its low corrosion rate in fast-moving seawater and its ability to resist stress-corrosion cracking in fresh water. It’s also resistant to many corrosive environments, including de-aerated hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids. However, Monel 400 does not perform well in nitric acid or ammonia systems because of its high copper content. It maintains good mechanical properties at subzero temperatures, withstands temperatures up to 1000°F, and has a melting point of 2370-2460°F. Although Monel 400 is relatively low in strength when annealed, its strength can be increased through various tempering methods.
Monel K500 is a nickel-copper alloy that can be strengthened through precipitation hardening, giving it greater strength and hardness compared to Monel 400. This is achieved by adding aluminum and titanium to the alloy and using heat treatment known as age hardening. In the age-hardened condition, Monel K500 may be more susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking in certain environments compared to Monel 400. However, K500 has approximately three times the yield strength and twice the tensile strength of Monel 400. It can also be further strengthened by cold working before precipitation hardening. Monel K500 retains its strength up to 1200°F and remains ductile and tough down to -400°F, with a melting range of 2400-2460°F.
