Stainless steel grade 317 is an improved version of grade 316 stainless steel. Fittings made from this steel are strong and have excellent corrosion resistance.
Grade 317L is a low-carbon version of 317 stainless steel. The “L” indicates less carbon content, which helps prevent intergranular corrosion. 317L fittings are stronger under stress, and they maintain higher tensile strength and resistance to rupture, even at high temperatures. The lower carbon also makes these fittings resistant to sensitization during heat-intensive processes like welding.
Because of this low carbon content, 317L fittings can be welded without suffering from intergranular corrosion, which happens when chromium carbide forms on the surface of metals with higher carbon content exposed to heat for long periods. Since 317L fittings can handle high temperatures without corroding, they can be used in welded form without additional treatments. This makes 317L pipe fittings especially useful in high-heat environments.

In their annealed state, Stainless Steel 317L Pipe Fittings are non-magnetic. Although these fittings cannot be hardened through heat treatment, they can become harder due to cold working. They are easy to weld and process using standard shop fabrication techniques, and post-weld heat treatment is not needed. Typically, Grade 317 stainless steel can be welded using fusion or resistance methods, but Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended for 317L Fittings. For the best results, it’s ideal to use 317L filler metal or AWS E/ER317.
What is Stainless Steel 317L Pipe Fittings?
The SS 317L Elbow is similar to standard stainless steel grade 317 in corrosion resistance and microstructure, thanks to its key elements—chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. These elements make 317L Stainless Steel Fittings highly resistant to chloride pitting and general corrosion. In fact, 317L Fittings perform better than common stainless steel grades like 304, 304L, 316, and 316L. The 317L alloy offers enhanced resistance, especially in harsh environments with chemicals like sulfurous compounds, chlorides, and other halides, compared to 316L.
